Loo with a view - Magnetic Island

Island has magnetic appeal - Magnetic Island

Magnetic by name, magnetic by nature just a twenty minute ferry ride from the North Queensland capital of Townsville will get you to a picturesque Island studded with large granite outcrops and palm fringed, sandy beaches.

Florence Bay

Holiday makers love to take a break and soak up the relaxed, tropical lifestyle of Maggie Island as its affectionately known. The tropical warm waters mean that during the months from November to April (wet season) you will need to wear a stinger suit when swimming outside of lifeguard patrolled stinger nets located at Horseshoe and Picnic Bay. Stingers suits can be hired or purchased from various outlets on the island.

Picnic Bay

Maggie Island is popular with backpackers who like to take advantage of the many attractions on offer including horseback riding, jet skiing, paddle boarding and snorkeling in the clear tropical waters. Magnetic Island is a hidden gem, off the beaten track and has only a handful of travellers compared to Cairns or Airlie Beach.

Horseshoe Bay

Maggie Island is an Anglers dream, with over 150 fish species inhabiting the reefs around Maggie you never know what you are going to reel in. Whether fishing from a boat or onshore you are almost guaranteed to catch anything from a barramundi to a strikingly, colourful reef fish such as coral trout. Magnetic Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area; some restrictions apply so check local zoning maps before casting your line.

There are a number of walks on Maggie including the popular Forts with stunning 360 degree views. If you keep your eyes open you might be lucky to see a koala in the wild. Magnetic Island is also home to a large rock wallaby colony.

The climb is worth it! Check out the view!

A variety of public buses and private hire enables visitor’s easy access on quite island roads for that weekend getaway, short break or extended holiday.
